Wharton China Career Program

I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Dongguan Luen Thai Garment Co. and would highly recommend it for anyone interested in manufacturing, the apparel industry, working in the Pearl River Delta, or understanding the socio-economic realities of China's rise as a global player. I had the opportunity to work on two very different project teams with wonderfully helpful co-workers who hailed from all over China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. They specifically assigned me projects that would allow me to interact with different managerial and production units, as well as practice the professional use of my Chinese and English. As part of my training, I had the chance to witness and study the different components of the manufacturing operation first-hand, as well as interview scores of people at the company, giving me not only a solid handle on the nature of apparel manufacture, but also an outstanding cross-sectional view of contemporary Chinese society. The accomodations were extremely generous, and my co-workers invited me to all sorts of recreational activities, including karaoke, weekend trips, dinners, and shopping. All in all, I felt that the internship helped me grow a great deal, not only as a professional, but as a human being, and would certainly encourage others to apply."

"Last summer, I worked in the CFO and CEO offices at PCCW China, assisting them with their research and daily operations. Overall, the internship was very fulfilling. It matched my expectations completely. Not only was I given many responsibilities, I was also allocated a very helpful mentor who trusted me and taught me many useful skills. The working environment at PCCW was more than very friendly—my co-workers took me out for lunches, shopping, movies, etc., treating me like a true friend. In addition, the CEO was particularly amiable. He assigned me to challenging research projects, while providing encouragement, thereby allowing me to gain experience and grow as an individual. I would definitely recommend this internship to all of you out there as I rate the whole experience highly."

"My internship at Taishin International Bank in Taipei, Taiwan exceeded all expectations. As an intern in the Retail Banking Marketing and Product Development Division, I had the opportunity to cycle through all the different business units in the Customer Relationship Management Division with a central focus in data mining. Not only did I undergo training in SAS and SQL to perform marketing post-mortem analysis on test and learn campaigns, but I also conducted in-depth research on two topics relevant to the organization, and then presented my test calculations and findings in front of the entire department. My co-workers and the SVP of the department were all very accommodating and willing to share their knowledge, and I was able to work closely with many of them on special projects, thus leveraging my English language skills while simultaneously developing my Chinese. The Career Program of WCBS is excellent - the logistical issues of working abroad were settled smoothly, and the placement choice balanced responsibility with adequate support. My summer in Taipei was truly unforgettable - an opportunity to experience first-hand both the dynamic nature of the Greater China business environment and the unique cultural heritage of the country."
