Consumerism Panel
Chinese Consumers and the Health Care Industry
The Chinese consumer market has been expanding at a remarkable rate for the past couple decades. High level of inflation, rapidly growing consumer purchase power, and an insatiable demand of consumer products became symbolic representations of the Chinese market. Within this fearlessly growing Chinese market, recently, the Chinese medical services industry has been given much global attention as China, like the USA, is on the verge of a major health care reform. The prospect of Chinese health care market is auspicious with a growing domestic demand for health care services, serious public health issues stemming from pollution and smoking, and the government’s firm will to overhaul the system. To analyze the opportunity in depth, this panel aims to discuss and, hopefully, answer the following four questions:
- What niche in the Chinese healthcare market can foreign companies target?
- How will the health care reform movement impact relevant multinationals operating in China?
- How have foreign companies served the rural Chinese health care market?
- What difficulties do foreign firms face when cooperating with Chinese firms in R&D effort?
