Industrialization Panel
Costs of China’s Spread of Industrialization
It is quite clear that China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Equally apparent is the corresponding development of China’s cities and urban areas. For years, China’s main cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, have risen to become some of most vibrant and successful economic centers in Asia. Most of China’s industrialization, however, has developed around coastal regions. No one can deny the rapid growth of these metropolitan areas. However, a huge fraction of China’s population still lives in the more inner mainland.
The panel will relate to the spread of industrialization and urbanization from the coastal regions into the heart of China, the mainland. More specifically, the panel will delve into the distinct costs of China’s continuous industrialization. It will explore the major costs of infrastructure, an essential component to any successful industrialized nation. The panel will also discuss the major energy costs necessary to fuel this growth in industry. The social costs and how the people of China are affected by these drastic changes will be addressed as well. Finally, the panel will discuss the enormous and incredibly important cost of pollution created from this industrialization.
